The Earth is covered by a large body of salty water called the ocean. Did you know the ocean covers 72% of the Earth’s surface? The ocean is divided into 5 main oceans. These oceans are called the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Southern.
The Earth’s tilt causes this
area to have at least one day of sunshine or one day of darkness. |
The Arctic Ocean is the smallest ocean and the shallowest ocean. This means it is not as deep as the
other oceans. Did you ever wonder where the name Arctic came from? Arctic comes from the Greek word “Arktos” which means bear. The Great Bear, also known as the Ursa Major constellation, can be seen from the Arctic region. The Arctic Ocean is made up of ice most of the year. Did you know this ice has ten percent of the world’s fresh water? Despite the cold conditions, the Arctic Ocean is home to many animals such as seals, walruses, beluga whales, and narwhals. The Arctic Ocean is also home to |
the polar bears. They live and hunt on the ice. However, due to climate changes, there is a great threat to the polar bear
population. This is because every year more and more of their icy home continues to melt. These animals are not the only creatures surviving in the arctic cold. A group of people, known as the Inuits, have also learned to adapt to their harsh environment. |
