Desert: a large area of land that gets little or no rain,,
Deserts are very dry and desolate places. It rains less than 250mm per year in most deserts.
A desert can be a hot desert or a cold desert. For example, the Sahara Desert in Africa is a hot desert and the Gobi Desert in Asia is a cold desert. Deserts take up one third of the Earth’s surface.
Not all deserts are made up of sand. Some deserts can be made up of rocks and others of snow and ice!
Also, not all hot deserts are always hot. A hot desert can get very cold at night, sometimes as cold as -5 degrees Celsius.
The lack of rainfall in deserts means there is not much vegetation. Desert winds are also very strong because there are no trees to block out the wind. These winds create dangerous dust storms.
Many of the plants and animals that live in deserts have adapted to survive. Plants like cacti have learned to store water. Most of the animals that live in the desert are nocturnal.
