The Earth is covered by a large body of salty water called the ocean. Did you know the ocean covers 72% of the Earth’s surface? The ocean is divided into 5 main oceans. These oceans are called the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Southern.
Oceanic trading became safer and quicker when the Suez Canal in Egypt was built in the 19th century. The canal enabled ships to trade between the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea without making long dangerous trips around the stormy southern cape of Africa.

The Indian Ocean is the third largest ocean. It is also the warmest ocean. The warm temperatures of the Indian Ocean make it hard for phytoplankton to grow. Phytoplankton are a food source and they are important because they support ocean life. This is the reason there is less marine life in the Indian Ocean compared to other oceans. The Indian Ocean is named after the country India.
Did you know the Indian Ocean is considered a closed ocean? This is because it is landlocked by the Asian continent. A common weather pattern that happens in the Indian Ocean is a monsoon. A monsoon brings a shift in wind direction, as well as a season of heavy rain. Historically, the Indian Ocean has some of the world’s most important trade ports. During the 1500s, the Indian Ocean was explored by sailors to find routes to different places. These routes allowed people to buy and exchange goods. Even today there are important trade ports in the Indian Ocean, such as ports in Mumbai and Singapore. |
