Bays are found all over the world. They can be found in lakes, oceans, and even rivers. Bays are important landforms for those who settle settle near them. Many Harbours and cities are located on bays, which provide opportunities for commerce and growth. Land around a bay is often fertile, which helps with production of agricultural goods. Bays are also considered safe places because the land around the bay acts as a shield, protecting the bay from strong winds and waves.
Bays can form in a few different ways. Larger bays are formed through plate tectonics. When the continents were first forming, tectonic plate movement caused continents to break apart or join together. The result was the formation of many large bays such as the Bay of Bengal or the Gulf of Mexico. Another way bays are formed is through erosion by natural forces such as wind, water or ice. Some examples of other famous bays include Botany Bay near Sydney, San Francisco Bay in California and Kowloon Bay in Hong Kong. |
