Rivers are found all over the world. They are shallow and narrow, or wide and deep. Rivers can be part of other landforms and they can create landforms. For example, the Grand Canyon was formed by a river wearing away at the land. Rivers start at a higher land elevation and they flow downwards. Did you know rivers flow from north to south as well as from south to north? Rivers are fed by other water sources such as lakes, streams and tributaries. Most rivers empty into a large water source such as an ocean or lake. The place where river starts is called the head water and the place where it ends is called the mouth.
For many years people have settled near rivers because they provide food, transportation and even hydroelectric energy. Rivers are also important because they provide clean drinking water. Only 3% of the water on earth is freshwater. A few of the more famous rivers around the world are the Mississippi River located in the United States, the Nile River in Africa and the Amazon River located in South America. The Amazon river is known as the worlds longest river and it spans 6,992 km. |
