The Pacific Ocean is both the largest and deepest ocean. It is bigger than all of the continents put together! The deepest part of the Pacific Ocean is called The Challenger Deep and it is located in the Mariana Trench. This part of the ocean can reach depths of 11,034 metres. Most of the Pacific Ocean still remains unexplored because of its size and depth.
Do you know how the Pacific Ocean got its name? Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan was the first European to travel across the Pacific Ocean. He called the ocean Mar Pacifico, which means peaceful sea. The Pacific Ocean is home to 75% of the world’s |
active volcanoes. These volcanoes are located around an area called the Ring of Fire. This area contains 450 volcanoes! When these volcanoes erupt they can cause natural disasters such as tsunamis and earthquakes.
The Pacific Ocean is also home to the Great Barrier Reef. It is a garden of coral which is the largest living structure on Earth. It can even be seen from outer space! |
