Have you ever looked outside after a rainstorm and spotted a rainbow?
A rainbow is a colourful arch of light in the sky. The colours in a rainbow are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. All of these colours are also the colour of sunlight! |
When we look at the sun, the light looks white. This is because our eyes cannot see the true colours of the sun.
How are rainbows formed?
When it is raining there is moisture in the air. When the sun comes out, the light shines through the water, and forms a rainbow. Rainbows are best when they form less than an hour or so after sunrise or less than an hour or so before sunset.

A rainbow shows the colours of sunlight because the light is bending and
reflecting the sunlight as it passes through water in the air. A rainbow is not something that can be touched or taken. It is a trick of the light. Rainbows are circles so they have no ends. They look semicircular because we can usually only see part of them. |
