When dark clouds begin to form in the sky there is a chance of a thunderstorm. A
thunderstorm is a storm with lightning, thunder, and rain or hail. There are also strong winds that can be as fast as 90 km per hour and above! These storms tend to happen more during warmer weather. |
This is because when the weather is warm there is more water in the air. Warm air will rise with the water vapours and form clouds. These clouds are known as
cumulonimbus clouds. During a thunderstorm there are flashes of lightning and roars of thunder. Did you know that thunder is a sound caused by lightning? |
When lightning strikes it produces heat and the air around the heat will expand or grow. The noise that follows is thunder. We see
the lightning in the sky before we hear thunder. This is because light travels faster than sound does. Thunderstorms can last for about 30 minutes so it is important to stay somewhere safe. |
